Driven by the urgency of the climate crisis, the IMACC initiative was launched in 2022 to mobilise the Indian museum community. What began as a pilot has since grown into a steady, committed network of museums taking practical steps towards environmental responsibility. Each year has built on the last. The second year concentrated on waste management as a realistic entry point, helping museums strengthen their systems before expanding their ambitions. Now entering its third cohort, IMACC is supporting museums to advance into measurable operational sustainability. This includes energy and water conservation, waste reduction, and considered offsets, alongside public engagement through awareness activities, exhibitions, and community led initiatives.
IMACC serves as the India hub for Culture Declares Emergency, a global movement advocating for sustainability through arts and culture. It  also aligns with Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 11, 12, and 13, advancing efforts towards sustainable communities, responsible consumption, and climate action.
